What is Hijama?
Hijama is also known as cupping. The word Hijama is derived from Hajm, which means sucking. This therapeutic treatment has a history of nearly 5000 years. It is a bloodletting technique introduced by the ancients and is now utilized by many regions like; Europe, China, the Middle East, and Asia.
Hijama aims at extracting congested or stagnated blood from specific areas of the body. This type of blood slows down the delivery of required antibodies, immune system cells, enzymes, vitamins, electrolytes, minerals, and oxygen to the organs, tissues, and cells of the individuals. The organs, tissues, and cells might not function at their best due to the congested or stagnated blood, which can cause them to get affected by the infection, overcome by bacteria, get inefficient, and progressively weak.
It is also used as a remedy for several health issues or conditions like mental health conditions (depression and anxiety), physical conditions (migraine, headaches, back pain, neck pain, sciatica), rheumatic conditions (arthritis), and blood diseases (hypertension). During the practice of Hijama, the cups are applied to various points on the skin, and then air is removed from inside the cups to create a vacuum.
Forgotten Sunnah
Hijama therapy was revived as a religious practice by our Beloved Prophet PBUH.
Anas Ibn e Malik (RA) reported that Messenger (PBUH) said, ” Indeed the best of remedies you have is HIjama (cupping)…” [Sahih Al Bukhari 5371]
**Salma, the servant of the Messenger (PBUH) said, “Whenever someone would complain of a headache to the Messenger of Allah (saw), he (saw) would advise them to perform Hijama (Cupping).” Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3858).**
